5 tips for creating a stylish and functional children’s bedroom

Decorating your child’s bedroom is an exciting project. But with children growing and changing so quickly, space often at a premium and limited budgets, there’s a lot to consider before starting the project. To make your job easier, we’re sharing our top 5 tips on finding the perfect balance of achieving a stylish and functional bedroom that your little one will love.

1. Choose a style or theme

To create a cohesive and stylish children’s room, have a clear direction in mind before you start. Not only will this simplify decision-making, but it’s also a fantastic way for your little one to get involved in the project—it’s their sanctuary, after all. Your child’s interests or favourite colour may inspire the theme or style. As children’s tastes can change quickly, stick to simple, neutral furniture and inject your theme via bedding, toys, art, lamps and other decor. That way, you don’t have to re-do the entire room as your child grows. Involve your child in choosing these items, giving them a sense of responsibility, pride and ownership.

2. Consider storage solutions

Creative storage solutions are crucial to designing a functional, clutter-free room. Start with smart dual-purpose storage pieces. We love bedside tables that double up as toy boxes, trunks that work as seating and tables and chairs with cleverly concealed storage for art supplies. Low, wall-mounted bookshelves and fun baskets for toys and other knick-knacks that reflect the room’s theme are other fantastic ideas. These may even inspire your child to tidy up!

3. Make it cosy and inviting

Create a warm, inviting space that your child will love spending time in. One of the easiest ways to do this is by choosing snuggly soft furnishings for your child’s bed and play area. Our beautiful thick, warm and cosy faux fur medium blanket lined with buttery-soft 100% cotton velour is perfect for children to snuggle up with in bed. For added comfort, pair it with our children's faux fur cushion, which makes a cosy addition to any child’s bed, sofa or play space. Rugs, play mats, soft toys and mood lighting will also help create a relaxed ambience.

4. Provide space for learning and creativity

Regular play is crucial for your child’s development, so why not create a space that fosters your child’s imagination and creativity? If you’re short on space, this could be as simple as a small table and chairs with built-in storage for craft supplies. Do you have more space to play with? Design a cosy nook where your child can read, play or unleash their creativity with art and craft projects. Furnish the area with a wall-mounted bookshelf, a comfy mat like our beautiful faux fur version with matching cushions for play and a table and chairs for drawing and creating. If you have plenty of space, you can even divide the room into separate zones for these activities. We also love the idea of creating a mini-exhibition of your child’s artwork in easy-to-update photo frames.

5. Create a space that grows with your child

If budget is a factor, avoid furniture your child will outgrow quickly, such as themed or colourful beds, bookshelves and storage. Choose pieces that will transition as your child grows. For example, a cot that converts into a toddler bed, adjustable stools, a chest of drawers with a removable change table or a changing table that converts into a desk. It’s also a good idea to opt for removable decals or framed prints instead of painting walls in non-neutral tones, so that it’s easy and affordable to update your child’s space as their interests change.
